The diameter of the objective lens determines how much light the optics can let in. This is an important factor in the performance of an instrument, for example, in dim light. The larger the objective lens diameter, the more light can be captured. The darker the environment, the larger the objective lens should be. Refer to the exact product name: the number after the ‘x’ indicates the objective lens diameter in millimeters. For example: a device marked 10×42 has an objective lens diameter of 42 mm.
Variable magnification allows flexible adjustment of magnification within a certain range. Unlike fixed magnification, it allows you to zoom in from the lower to the higher value. As the magnification increases, the field of view – the visible image area – becomes smaller. Check the exact product name: the number before the ‘x’ indicates the magnification. For example: 30-70×95 means a device with variable magnification from 30x to 70x.
The field of view describes the size of the image area visible through the optics. It is expressed in meters (width) at a distance of 1000 meters (m/1000m), in feet (width) at a distance of 1000 yards (ft/1000 yds), or in degrees. The higher the magnification, the smaller the field of view.
Binoculars have a large field of view, allowing you to survey a wide area. Telescopes (spotting scopes) have higher magnification, reducing the field of view but allowing you to observe more detail.
