In 1980, Barbour produced their first short, lightweight jacket, the Bedale.
Originally designed for horseback riding, the Bedale is worn by many Britons, from royalty to pop icons.
Dame Margaret Barbour designed the Bedale with equestrian practices in mind – with a shorter length, relaxed fit, rear vents and the essential nylon “drip-strip” on the inside that prevents moisture from horses from seeping into the jacket.
Made from medium-weight 6oz waxed cotton and fully interactive with optional zip-in thermal liners and hood, the Bedale is a brilliant year-round jacket.
The classic elements of a Barbour jacket are all present, with a brass two-way zipper and ‘Stormfly’ front with snaps, two large bellows pockets and two moleskin-lined handwarmer pockets, and the traditional corduroy collar with snaps for a hidden throat flap.
The Bedale is now a classic, and its practical and simple style remains popular with all ages.
The Bedale’s popularity has led to a slimmed-down version for women – the Beadnell, named after a small fishing village in Northumberland.
