In 1980, Barbour produced its first short, lightweight jacket, the Bedale. The Bedale was originally designed for horseback riding and is worn by many Britons, from royalty to pop icons.
Dame Margaret Barbour designed the Bedale with equestrian activities in mind—featuring a shorter length, a relaxed fit, ventilation openings at the back, and the essential nylon “drip-strip” on the inside that prevents moisture from horses from seeping into the jacket. Made from medium-weight 6-ounce waxed cotton and fully customizable with optional zip-in thermal liners and hoods, the Bedale is a brilliant jacket for year-round use.
All the classic elements of a Barbour jacket are present, including a brass two-way zipper and a “Stormfly” front with snap buttons, two large gusseted pockets, and two moleskin-lined handwarmer pockets, and the traditional corduroy collar with snap buttons for a hidden throat flap.
The Bedale is now a classic, and its practical, simple style remains popular with people of all ages.
The Bedale’s popularity has led to a slimmer version for women—the Beadnell, named after a small fishing village in Northumberland.
